Student privacy

The names and entries you type into SpinOfLuck are saved only in your own browser's localStorage. They are never transmitted to our servers, never associated with a user account, and never shared with third parties. We do not sell student data.

We recommend entering first names only, or anonymised labels such as “Group 1” or “Student 7”, especially when the wheel is projected in front of others. Avoid entering sensitive personal information (full legal names combined with other identifiers, special-category data, etc.).

The optional multiplayer room feature lets multiple devices share the same wheel in real time. It should not be used for sessions containing confidential student data.

For full details, see our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Randomness transparency

Every name on the wheel has an exactly equal chance of being picked.SpinOfLuck uses the browser's built-in secure random generator to decide the outcome of each spin — the same kind of randomness used by password managers and security software. It is unbiased and not influenced by previous spins.

For IT administrators

SpinOfLuck requires no installation, no browser extensions, and no plugins. It runs in any modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) over a standard HTTPS connection.

There is no account system to provision or manage, no software licences to track, and no student or roster data stored on our servers on behalf of your school — wheel entries stay in the teacher's browser. (The only server-side records are the anonymous usage counters described in our Privacy Policy, and temporary multiplayer room state if a teacher chooses to host a live room.)

If your school uses content-filtering or firewall allowlists, add www.spinofluck.com to permit access. The core wheel needs no other domains; if you want the optional multiplayer rooms to work, also allow firestore.googleapis.com.

Frequently asked questions

Is SpinOfLuck safe for students?
Yes. SpinOfLuck is designed to be classroom-safe. There is no gambling, no betting, no real-money prizes, and no accounts of any kind. The wheel runs entirely in the browser and no student data is sent to a server.
Is SpinOfLuck a gambling site?
No. SpinOfLuck has no gambling, no betting, and no real-money prizes of any kind. It is a neutral randomisation tool used by teachers to fairly pick students, form groups, and run review games.
Do students need accounts or passwords?
No accounts, no logins, and no passwords are required for anyone — students or teachers. Simply open the site and start spinning.
Do we need to download or install anything?
No. SpinOfLuck runs entirely in a modern web browser. There is nothing to download, install, or update.
Do you collect or sell student data?
No. The names or entries you type into the wheel are stored only in your browser's localStorage and are never transmitted to our servers. We do not collect, store, or sell student data.
Can I use student names on the wheel?
Yes, with sensible precautions. We recommend using first names only, or anonymised labels such as "Group 1" or "Student 7", especially when projecting in front of other people. Avoid entering sensitive personal information such as full names combined with dates of birth or other identifiers.
Is SpinOfLuck COPPA or FERPA compliant?
SpinOfLuck is designed to be privacy-friendly: it requires no personal data, no accounts, and stores nothing on our servers. However, we are not a formal COPPA- or FERPA-certified service and do not make that claim. Because teachers control exactly what they type into the wheel, and that data never leaves the device, the tool is well-suited to privacy-conscious classroom use. Contact your school's data protection officer if you need a formal assessment.
Does it work on Chromebooks and iPads?
Yes. SpinOfLuck works on any device with a modern browser, including Chromebooks, iPads, Android tablets, Windows laptops, and Mac computers. No extensions or apps are required.
Is SpinOfLuck free for schools?
Yes, completely free. There are no subscriptions, licences, or premium tiers required for classroom use.
Can it pick random groups or teams?
Yes. You can enter student names (or group labels) and spin to form random groups, assign roles, or pick teams — a common use case in classrooms and PE lessons.
Is the random selection fair?
Yes. Every spin uses the browser's built-in cryptographic random generator (crypto.getRandomValues), which produces statistically unbiased results. Every entry on the wheel has an equal chance of winning, and previous spins do not influence future spins. See our randomness page for details.
Does it work offline or behind a school firewall?
SpinOfLuck loads from the web, so an initial internet connection is required. Once the page has loaded it runs locally in the browser — no further network calls are needed to spin the wheel. If your school filters web content, ask your IT team to allowlist www.spinofluck.com.
How should teachers protect student privacy when using the wheel?
Use first names or anonymised labels (e.g. "Student 1") rather than full names. Avoid entering sensitive personal details. Do not use the optional multiplayer room feature for sessions containing confidential student information. Clear the wheel entries when you are done if the device is shared.
