How it works

Five seconds to your first answer. Here's the whole flow:

  1. Pick your ball. Browse the collection below the wheel. Start with Classic, or jump straight to Funny, Love, AI Oracle, Anime — whichever matches your mood. Common balls are unlocked from the start; the rest unlock as you play.
  2. Type your yes-or-no question. Tap the question box and ask anything that can be answered with yes or no — "Should I text them?", "Will it rain tomorrow?", "Is this idea good?".
  3. Shake the ball. Click or tap the ball, or hit Enter. It wobbles for about a second and a half — that's the suspense — then reveals one random answer from the active ball's pool. Each ball has its own voice and glow.
  4. Share or save the answer. Tap Copy to put the answer on your clipboard, or Share to send a link that opens directly to your result (with the same ball selected). Star any answer to save it to your Favorites list.
  5. Earn XP and unlock more balls. Every spin earns XP. Hit streaks, try new balls, level up — and Rare, Epic, and Legendary balls progressively unlock. The final unlock is the Legendary Chaos ball.

Stuck for ideas? Pinched from real conversations — the ball is ready when you are.

  • Should I text them back?
  • Will I get the job?
  • Will my crush say yes?
  • Should I order pizza tonight?
  • Is today my lucky day?
  • Should I take the leap?
  • Will we win the game?
  • Should I book the trip?

About the Magic 8 Ball

What is the Magic 8 Ball?

The Magic 8 Ball is a fortune-telling novelty originally released by Mattel in 1950. Shaped like an oversized billiard ball, it answers yes-or-no questions by floating one of 20 pre-written replies up to a small window. The online Magic 8 Ball is a digital recreation: you type a question, tap the virtual ball, and get a random answer from the same set — instantly, on any device, for free.

How is the answer chosen?

Each shake calls the browser's built-in random number generator (Math.random()) to pick one answer from the active pool — 20 in Classic mode, more or fewer in Funny, Savage, Positive, and Custom modes. The ball avoids immediately repeating the previous answer, but otherwise the draw is independent: there's no memory, no weighting, and the past doesn't influence the future.

Why the online version is better than the toy

The original toy holds 20 fixed answers and weighs half a kilogram. The online version fits in your pocket, lets you switch answer banks for the mood you're in, supports custom answers (great for restaurant picks or party decisions), keeps a history of every shake, and lets you share an answer with a single tap. The shake animation is visceral, the glow is satisfying, and you never lose it under the couch.

When to use the 8 ball (and when not to)

The Magic 8 Ball shines for low-stakes choices and party games — "Should I order dessert?", "Will my team win tonight?", "Truth or dare?". It's also a surprisingly useful tool for breaking decision paralysis: the moment you see the answer, you usually know whether you're relieved or disappointed — and that's your real answer. Don't use it for legal, medical, or financial decisions.

People also ask

What is the Magic 8 Ball?
The Magic 8 Ball is a fortune-telling toy that answers yes-or-no questions with one of 20 randomly-selected replies. Originally made by Mattel in 1950, the online version recreates the same randomised answer system in your browser — no app or signup needed.
How many balls are in the collection?
15 themed prediction balls in total: Classic, Funny, Savage, Positive, Love, AI Oracle, Fortune Cookie, Kids, Horror, Cosmic, Pirate, Wizard, Emoji, Anime, and the legendary Chaos ball. Each ball has its own answer pool, glow palette, voice timbre, and rarity tier — pick whichever matches your mood.
How do I unlock new balls?
Common balls are unlocked from the start. Rare, Epic, and Legendary balls unlock as you play — most require a number of total spins, trying different balls, hitting a daily streak, or reaching an XP threshold. You'll see the exact requirement on each locked card. The Chaos ball is the legendary final unlock and requires trying every other ball first.
How does the online Magic 8 Ball work?
Pick a ball from the collection, type a yes-or-no question, then tap the ball. It wobbles for about a second and a half — that's the suspense — and reveals one random answer from the active ball's answer pool. Each shake is an independent draw; past answers don't influence future ones.
Is the online Magic 8 Ball really random?
Yes. Each shake uses your browser's Math.random() to pick from the active ball's answer pool, and the picker avoids repeating the previous answer so the experience feels fresh. There's no server-side weighting and no tracking of what you ask.
Is the Magic 8 Ball free to use?
Completely free. No signup, no paywall, no ads inside the experience. Every ball — even the Legendary Chaos ball — is permanently free to unlock through play. Works on phones, tablets, and desktops.
What questions should I ask?
Anything that can be answered with yes or no works best — "Should I…?", "Will I…?", "Is it…?". Open-ended questions like "What should I do?" don't fit the format, but you can still shake for fun. Different balls suit different questions: ask the Love ball about crushes, the AI Oracle about life decisions, the Savage ball when you need a reality check.
What's the difference between Funny, Savage, Love, and Positive balls?
Funny adds internet-flavoured chaos ("404: prophecy not found"). Savage delivers brutally honest roasts ("You already know the answer"). Love is the relationship oracle ("Text them", "Red flag detected"). Positive only gives encouraging answers — great when you need a confidence boost instead of a coin flip.
What does each rarity tier mean?
Rarity controls the unlock cost — not the quality. Common balls (Classic, Funny, Positive, Kids, Emoji) are available immediately. Rare balls (Savage, Love, Fortune, Pirate, Anime) require a few spins or a few balls tried. Epic balls (AI Oracle, Horror, Cosmic, Wizard) need XP, streaks, or deeper engagement. The Legendary Chaos ball is the final unlock.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The page loads once and runs entirely in your browser. After your first visit you can shake any unlocked ball without an internet connection.
Can I share my answer with friends?
Tap Share to get a link that opens the exact answer (and the same ball) for whoever you send it to, or tap Copy to paste into chat. On mobile we use the native share sheet so you can send it straight to WhatsApp, Messages, or any installed app.
Is this the same as the real Mattel Magic 8 Ball?
The Classic ball uses the same 20 answers as the original Mattel ball, in the same proportions. The other 14 balls are original creations. The toy itself is a trademarked Mattel product — this is a free online recreation and theme collection for entertainment.
